Brownfield Research and Innovation Centre (BRIC)

 

The BRIC project is a new research Centre of Excellence that will ultimately be based in the University’s Springfield Campus in the centre of Wolverhampton. A team of researchers, academics and knowledge transfer specialists have established the Centre, supplemented by additional university expertise. The Centre has received £3.2million of funding, 50% from the ERDF programme to fund the staffing and equipping of the Centre, and has the remit to build a brownfield knowledge hub for the region and to directly support businesses in the Black Country.

 

BRIC provides an essential and much-needed core of Brownfield expertise in the Black Country sub-region. The Centre is developing a knowledge bank of remediation best practice, and is sharing gathered intelligence and expertise with stakeholders in both the public and private sectors, to identify research and support regional demand for the release of brownfield land for development. It is informing how land and buildings can be restored, remediated and bought back into use, with a particular focus on bio-remediation and environmental sensitivities, and developing environmentally sound solutions for complex remediation issues.

 

Target beneficiaries include local enterprises, the Black Country local authorities, large contractors and SME’s seeking improved links with the University in brownfield remediation and interested in engaging in research collaboration with the Centre. BRIC is investing in scanning and testing facilities to support existing soil, materials and bioremediation expertise, bringing together a team of sufficient size and necessary resources to tackle the Black Country’s complex brownfield challenges. Examples of companies targeted include – those involved in demolition and site preparation, contractors, civil engineers, architects, surveyors and geospatial engineers, environmental consultancies, ecologists, and any other companies needing to access research in remediation of both land and buildings, to support innovation within their businesses. The ultimate beneficiary is the Black Country which benefits from BRIC supporting the process of bringing de-contaminated land back into use for development, thereby attracting investment into the region.

 

BRIC is currently based on Wolverhampton City Campus, but will be moving to the Springfield Campus once it is completed. Springfield itself is an ambitious project which aims to bring 12-acres of brownfield land, the site of the former Springfield Brewery, back into use. The Springfield campus is strongly linked to the regeneration of Wolverhampton City Centre.

 

We are seeking to recruit a Knowledge Transfer Manager to the existing team who can drive forward the project and ensure delivery of the business and research outputs. The role is part funded by the European Regional Development Fund with funding secured to 30th September 2020.

 

The KT Manager will act as the focal point for the delivery of the BRIC business support strand, managing all SME support projects, assessing companies coming into the project, and arranging the delivery of business assists to companies by drawing on the resources provided through BRIC i.e. professors and research staff.

 

You will be responsible for ensuring that SME’s get the best support possible from the project, maximising the knowledge transfer opportunities for both SME’s and university by engaging with academic staff, and providing training and mentoring.

 

You will be expected to develop, deliver (with others) and manage a series of Brownfield related workshops as a means of attracting SME’s to the project, and be able to support SME’s and large companies to access further university support e.g. KT projects, apprenticeships, training etc.

 

You will also support the Project Manager in maintaining excellent industrial links with the market drivers for remediation of land and buildings in the Black Country.
