Research Assistant x 2 - Deaf access by Deaf people - 0.7FTE - Until 31/03/2028
We are seeking two talented and ambitious signing researchers to work on the Open Research Area 8th call (ORA8) an ESRC funded research project.
This research will contribute to this literature by focusing on the process and production of Deaf Mediators, Interpreters, and Translators (DMIT) by undertaking a:
i. representative review of the situation of DMIT in selected European countries
ii. cross-linguistic analysis of DMIT interpreting and translation in selected settings
This research will examine the impact of the different journeys and unique histories including the impact of different DMIT professionals within each country in three areas:
1. the translation of information by government, municipality, and non-government organisations from written to signed languages found on websites, new media, and other avenues to provide access to wider society,
2. interpreting on television broadcasts and via webcast to signed languages, and
3. interpreting within conference settings
The research will also explore the features of DMIT products within the three areas that facilitate comprehension by deaf audiences. This allows for a comparison between countries across all three areas with some focus on country-specific linguistic and cultural expectations. It should also find factors that facilitate comprehension in all countries and contexts.
We welcome applications from excellent candidates who can contribute to this research project. To be considered for this Research Assistant post you will ideally be an experienced, trained researcher, qualified to postgraduate level in a relevant discipline.
We are looking to recruit 2 x 0.7 FTE Research Assistants –
Research Assistant (Deaf) 0.7 FTE Translation and Conference UK RSLT/I (WP1 WP3)
Research Assistant (Deaf) 0.7 FTE TV/media and community RSLT/I(intra) (WP2 WP4)
There is some flexibility in the hiring process – 2 posts totaling 1.4 FTE (7 days a week) which may not be a 50/50 split e.g. could be a 0.6FTE and 0.8FTE (a 3 day and 4 day a week post) or 1.0FTE and 0.4FTE (a full time and a 2 day a week post) although this would then change the WP responsibilities.
You will need to be fluent in a sign language and possess sufficient breadth or depth of knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to provide research assistance to the project.
Please see the Job Description for further details on these posts.
